11th Annual Lunar New Year Crime Prevention and Public Safety Campaign!

The Year of the Rat fell on February 7, 2008. SAFE launched its annual Lunar New Year Crime Prevention and Public Safety Awareness Campaign. SAFE and Captain Jim Dudley of Central Station launched the 11th Annual campaign with a Press Conference at the gate to Chinatown. SAFE staff and volunteers helped distribute crime prevention educational materials.

We provided Asian merchants and residents with educational information on preventing extortion, robbery, burglary, shoplifting and pick-pocketing crimes during the forthcoming festival celebrations. This is a city-wide campaign involving police officers of all Police Districts in San Francisco and volunteers from a number of public agencies and Community-Based Organizations, reminding the public to be aware of crime and to make prompt police reports about criminal and suspicious activities.

To download the materials that were distributed click HERE.

Since the launching of the first campaign in 1998, SAFE and SFPD have achieved a significant drop in extortions targeting Asian merchants. In this year's campaign, SAFE will also emphasize its efforts and message about the effective prevention of Burglary and Fraud Schemes that seem to be on the rise.

The campaign is a great example of Community Policing, encouraging merchants and residents to get to know the police officers in their neighborhood, and to be aware of ways to help prevent crime.

Castro Community On Patrol (CCOP)

CCOP is dedicated to making the Castro Community a safe place to live and to play. The CCOP Program coordinates patrols of trained volunteers to walk the Castro District. The volunteers are a visible presence that deters illegal activity and are available to contact authorities when there is a problem. If you would like to find out more about volunteering for CCOP, please visit their website at castropatrol.org

SAFE's "Kids & Cops" Program

“Kids & Cops” is a program that has been implemented by SAFE in neighborhoods throughout the city over the past four years. Also known as “Cops Read to Kids,” this program helps increase children's literacy and listening skills, educates them about crime prevention and public safety, and encourages positive relationships with the police. “Kids & Cops” addresses different safety concerns such as personal safety at home and on the street, bullying prevention, abduction prevention, emergency preparedness, conflict resolution and community building. SAFE welcomes volunteers and sponsors for the “Kids & Cops” program. For more information, contact Elly Mayen at SAFE: (415) 553-1986 or elly@sfsafe.org.
