San Francisco SAFE (Safety Awareness for Everyone) will be holding a public safety awareness press conference to kick off the 2013 Lunar New Year (Year of the Snake) celebration. The event will be hosted in partnership with: Mayor Ed Lee; Chief of Police Greg Suhr; the San Francisco Police Commission; The Board of Supervisors; District Attorney’s Office; and Captain Garret Tom, Commanding Officer at Central Police Station.
On Wednesday, January 30th, the SFPD, SAFE, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, American Red Cross Youth for Elderly Bay Area Chapter, Community Youth Center (CYC), the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, and community volunteers will begin distributing crime prevention tips and resources to merchants and shoppers in Chinatown, then throughout the city on subsequent days.
Information to merchants will include safety tips to prevent extortion, burglary, robbery and details on what to do if there is an incident and how to communicate with the police. This year we will also include information in small red packets containing information on Asian street scam safety. A second press conference will be held on Thursday, January 31st at 11:30 am in the Richmond Police District at 601 Clement Street @ 7th Avenue.
