San Francisco SAFE would like to invite you to attend the 15th Annual Lunar New Year Extortion Prevention and Public Safety press conference on:

Thursday, January 12, 2012
12:30 p.m.
Gate to Chinatown, Grant @ Bush Streets

Lunar New Year, commonly known as Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival, is the most celebrated annual holiday by the Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean. Lunar New Year is a time of celebration and traditional customs that date back thousands of years. The San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade is so popular that it is a significant annual attraction to local residents and tourists.

The Public Safety Press Conference is an opportunity to stress the importance of crime prevention during the Lunar New Year festivities, as well as how people can report crimes and communicate with the San Francisco Police Department and their District representative.

SAFE, in partnership with San Francisco Police Department, sponsors this annual city-wide awareness campaign to educate Asian merchants about extortion, burglary and robbery prevention. This year we are also educating the community on how to recognize and prevent crimes relating to cell phone thefts on the street and on public transportation. Approximately 3,500 crime prevention packets in Chinese and English are distributed city-wide by our teams, volunteers and police officers from each district.

Join SAFE, Police Chief Greg Suhr, the SFPD, Mayor Ed Lee, Supervisors David Chiu and Carmen Chu, and other city and law enforcement representatives as we get to know the merchants and talk to them about safety. It is valuable face-to-face time with the community.

Because of our vigorous on-going public educational outreach efforts, we have found a significant reduction of crime and a willingness by the Asian merchants to report crime and suspicious activity.

Please join us on January 12th to launch this important public safety campaign. There will also be a second press conference on January 13th in the Taraval Police District. For more information contact SAFE at (415) 553-1984 or email info@sfsafe.org; or David Chan at (415) 553-1985 if you would like to volunteer or assist us in canvassing the neighborhoods.

This event was made possible by the above agencies and the financial support of Portsmouth Square Garage (SFPSG) Community Participation. You can join supporting our efforts by making a donation to the Lunar New Year Public Safety Campaign. Your contribution will help us to print materials and do outreach to the community. You will also be recognized on SAFE’s website and in our publications.Interested donors please email cindy@sfsafe.org
